Marie Roget

1841. Paris. A woman is floating in the river Seine.

The work began with Performance for Stage and Screen students at Sheffield Hallam University performing an adapted reading of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Mystery of Marie Roget. Based upon the murder of Mary Cecila Rogers in New York in 1841, it is considered to be the first ‘true crime’ story.

The intention of the work was to deconstruct the tropes and patterns of detective crime and ‘dead girl’ mysteries.

UK/Australian performance company Doppelgangster have prepared this version of the tale especially for the students as part of an initial research and development project into Poe’s tales of ratiocination.

This collaborative work with Sheffield Hallam University is supported by Doppelgangster’s DeepWater artist development programme. The initial Research and Development phase was originally developed as a commission for the Off The Shelf Festival (2017) and took place at the Winter Gardens in Sheffield city centre.
